Install the app

Specset runs in any modern browser, and you never have to install anything. If you use it often, or you use it in the field, you can add it to your home screen instead. It then opens in its own window with no address bar, gets its own icon in the app switcher, and updates itself.

Installing is optional. Nothing about the browser version changes, and you can use both on the same device.

Install on iPhone or iPad

You must use Safari. Chrome, Firefox, and Edge on iOS cannot add apps to the home screen.

1. Open Specset in Safari and sign in.
2. Tap the Share button in the toolbar.
3. Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen.
4. Confirm the name and tap Add.

The Specset icon appears on your home screen. The first time you open it, you will be asked to sign in again. That is expected: iOS keeps an installed app's data completely separate from Safari, so your browser session does not carry over. You only do this once.

If your organization signs in with Microsoft, that works in the installed app too.

Install on Android

1. Open Specset in Chrome and sign in.
2. Open the account menu from your avatar in the upper right.
3. Tap Install app, then confirm.

Chrome may also offer to install Specset on its own. Either route installs it as a normal Android app, so it shows up in your app drawer and app switcher.

Install on desktop

Chrome and Edge can install Specset as a desktop app. Open the account menu from your avatar in the upper right and click Install app. It then opens in its own window instead of a browser tab.

Safari on macOS uses File > Add to Dock instead.

Open a project automatically on site

The installed app can recognize when you arrive at a project site and open that project's chat automatically. This is optional and only runs in the installed app, not in a regular browser tab.

Set the project site

You need permission to manage the project before you can set its site location.

1. Open the project and go to Project Settings > General.
2. Scroll to Site Location.
3. Enter the site's latitude and longitude, or select Use current location while you are on site.
4. Set the On-site radius. A device must be inside this distance to match the project.

The default radius is 250 meters. You can set it from 50 to 5,000 meters to fit the size of the jobsite. If the project came from Procore, Specset also imports and refreshes available project coordinates.

Turn on nearby-project detection

1. Open the installed Specset app.
2. On the Projects screen, select Enable when Specset offers to open nearby projects automatically.
3. Allow location access when your device asks.

You can turn this off or back on later from the account menu under Nearby project.

When one project site matches your location, Specset opens a new project chat with that project's context loaded. If multiple sites match, choose the project you want. If there is no confident match, the Projects screen stays open.

Your current device location is checked locally for the match and is not stored or sent to Specset. The project coordinates and radius are saved as project settings so other authorized project members can use the same on-site flow.

Getting updates

The installed app updates itself. There is no app store, and no version to download.

When a new version of Specset ships while you have the app open, an Update available badge appears in the header. Tap it to load the new version. If you ignore it, the app picks up the update the next time you open it.

When you are offline

Specset needs a connection to load your projects, so the installed app is not an offline tool.

What it does do is fail clearly. If you open the app without a connection, it starts and tells you it cannot reach Specset, with a Try again button, instead of showing a blank page. That matters most on a phone in the field, where there is no address bar to tell you what went wrong.

Remove the app

Removing the installed app never affects your Specset account or any project data.

• iPhone or iPad. Touch and hold the icon, then choose Remove App.
• Android. Touch and hold the icon, then choose Uninstall, or remove it from Settings like any other app.
• Desktop. Open the app, click the menu in its window, and choose the uninstall option for Specset.

You can always go back to using Specset in your browser, and you can reinstall it later.
